AI Helps UX Work Go Faster, but Workers Still Have Concerns
AI often saves UX practitioners time, but quality problems and workplace pressure can limit the benefits.
AI can help UX practitioners finish work faster without making their jobs feel easier. Nielsen Norman Group asked 521 people how AI affects their work. Respondents reported time savings across the tasks where they used AI. But their feelings were only mildly positive, with an average rating of 3.57 out of 5. The survey shows that speed and satisfaction are different things.
The kind of work matters when people decide whether to use AI. It was common for coding, desk research, and analyzing research data. Desk research means learning from existing material rather than meeting users directly. AI was used less often for user interviews and testing designs with people. It can help prepare these sessions, but the sessions themselves still take time.
Many respondents also reported problems that made AI harder to use well. Concerns about output quality affected 54%, while data security or privacy affected 50%. Some people spent significant time checking and fixing AI-generated work. Others worried about ethics or the environment. Having access to a tool did not mean they could use it comfortably or trust its results.
Workplace expectations added another source of difficulty for some people in the survey. Managers sometimes required AI use and tracked how often employees used it. Respondents described pressure to work faster even when generated results needed correction. Some also had to fix poor work created by other people using AI. In these situations, faster generation could create more checking rather than less work.
Positive experiences were also part of the survey, sometimes from the same people. AI helped respondents learn skills, try more ideas, and work beyond their usual abilities. However, the comments need careful interpretation: 226 people chose to leave one. Of those comments, 69% included some negative feeling, not 69% of all respondents. The overall finding is that AI's benefits depend on the task and how the workplace uses it.
