Change AI Tools Without Changing App Code

Teams often need different AI systems for different kinds of work. AI means computer systems that can do tasks like answering questions. One task may need low costs, while another needs careful thinking. Vercel now offers a way to manage these choices together. A model is an AI system that does the requested work.

Vercel's new feature is called Virtual Models on AI Gateway. A Virtual Model gives a task one name with changeable settings. The team puts this name into its apps and tools. It then chooses which model will answer requests using that name. The apps can keep their name when that choice changes.

Before this feature, changing a model often meant releasing app code again. Now the team can make the change inside AI Gateway instead. Apps using that task name receive the change within a few minutes. The team can also choose another company to provide the model. Different tasks can have their own names and choices.

For example, sorting customer help requests may happen hundreds of times hourly. Reading a legal agreement may happen only a few times daily. These jobs do not always need the same cost or thinking ability. Vercel lets teams make a different choice for each job. Rules about data use can stay with the task name.

Teams should still test a new model before changing a live service. Vercel suggests using a second name to try the new choice. If quality falls after a change, teams can restore the earlier model. Some company-specific settings also need checking when the company changes. Keeping one name makes updates easier, but checking results still matters.
