A Clearer Design Helps People See Their Rights

People cannot easily use a service if they do not understand it. This was part of the problem facing an organisation in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Human Rights wanted its purpose to be clearer. It asked Chicago design studio Span to help change its public image. The work focused on information people could notice and understand.

The department has investigated unfair treatment in several areas since 1980. These include work, housing, and places open to the public. But it worried that people saw it as distant and difficult. Span knew a new logo could not repair public trust alone. The team also changed how the department presents information and communicates.

The new logo gives the words Human Rights the most attention. The smaller words Illinois Department of sit between two large lines. Together, these parts suggest an equal sign, showing the idea of fairness. The team used a strong style of letters called HEX Franklin. Posters and signs from past rights movements helped guide the design.

The project also gives staff materials they can use for different situations. They have ways to present news, photographs, events, and urgent messages. Public events use a connected set of signs and printed materials. The department shared information at Juneteenth events and the Illinois State Fair. It also gave out stickers and other items at Chicago's Pride Parade.

The aim is more than making the organisation look different. Span wants people to recognise what the department does for them. Clear words and a shared design help carry that message into public places. The project connects a simple visual idea with everyday communication. It gives the department practical ways to explain its purpose.
