AI Cannot Create Real Evidence for Empathy Maps

2026년 8월 28일출처 Nielsen Norman Group

AI can organize real research for an empathy map, but it cannot create trustworthy user evidence.

An empathy map shows what a team knows about a type of user. It usually has four parts: Says, Thinks, Does, and Feels. Teams often make the map together with sticky notes. The notes should come from real research, such as interviews, observations, support messages, or diary studies. This gives the team a shared view of the user.

AI can quickly create notes that sound like a frustrated user. This may seem helpful when a workshop is near and research is missing. However, believable words are not the same as real evidence. AI does not know your users, their exact situation, or the special problems in your product. Its answers may describe almost any user, so they do not describe one real person well.

Real research includes specific details. A user may explain the exact item that an app replaced, the exact time of a calendar problem, or a special step used before sending money. These details show real behavior and context. An AI quote may sound clear, but it is still an assumption. Making the invented quote more detailed does not turn it into evidence.

AI can still support empathy mapping after research. It can group notes, clean up language, summarize patterns, and suggest a first way to organize findings. A researcher must review and correct this work. AI should not invent users, fill empty parts of the map, or create emotions and behaviors for people who were never studied.

Before using AI, ask where every note came from. Check whether it is a real observation or only a likely idea. If the team cannot answer, it needs more research. A shortcut can move the problem to a later stage. The team may build a product for users who do not exist. AI can help process learning, but only real people can provide the evidence behind an empathy map.
